What is a Treatment Like?
What happens at an appointment?
Appointments start with a consultation chat and assessment followed by the treatment.
During a bowen treatment there will be pauses or breaks. This break between each set of moves is to allow the body to process these signals and therefore increases the effectiveness of the treatment.
Treatments are usually whilst you are laying on your front, side or back on the therapy couch, however they can be done whilst you are sat if you are not able to lay down.
Bowen can be performed directly on the skin or through light clothing meaning there is no need to undress. T-shirts, joggers, leggings or light trousers are ideal to wear to your appointment.
What does it feel like?
Bowen generally uses a gentle rolling type movement and holding points, it is not a flick, ‘click’ or a slide over the skin. Instead, it uses the skin slack available to move over the underlying tissue. Each move covers only a small area. The move may be tender at times if there is a problem area however the pressure applied can be adjusted to your comfort levels.
The amount of treatment will vary as each session is tailored to what you need as an individual, at that time.
In most cases, you will feel an immediate relief however it is possible that you may walk out feeling only a little improvement. The responses in your body often occur in the days following a treatment resulting in a more longstanding improvement.
If you have never had bowen before, I strongly recommend an initial course of 3 – 5 sessions, 5-10 days apart to get the best from your bowen treatments.
This course will allow your body time to process the work, make changes and encourage these changes to hold. If there is absolutely no change after 3 sessions I would look to be referring you on to another option.
Many find that their complaint resolves after the initial course however, depending on severity, complexity and duration, it may take a little longer.
How Many Sessions?
The number of sessions you will need is dependant on the results obtained. If there is continued and sustained progress treatment can continue until the problem is resolved. At each appointment we will discuss your progress.
In addition to this, many people have maintenance treatments to aid in increased energy levels, manage long term pain or fatigue, reduce stress levels and improve their overall health and well-being.
These sessions can be at an interval most appropriate to you such as monthly, 6-8 weeks, 3 months or when you feel the need for a top up.
